Skunk cabbage community in Imazu (今津のザゼンソウ群落)
The skunk cabbage community of Imazu is a habitat for the plant located in Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture. It is known as the southernmost natural habitat for the plant in Japan.
Skunk cabbage grows widely and in high concentration in the wetlands of Aibano.
It was discovered in 1981 by students of Imazu Junior High School while conducting observations for their science class.
It was designated Specific Plant Community under the Environment Agency's National Survey on the Natural Environment in 1986 and was named Green Preservation Zone under the Nature Conservation Regulation in Shiga Prefecture in 1989.
Skunk Cabbage Festival' is held in the area every year in late February.
